Designing for Mobile Web

i've been designing websites, professionally, on 7 years now. still haven't migrated in doing complete css production of page (but using font/link management currently)...still using general amount of nested tables.

rather going out , buying 300 page book on designing mobile web, wondering following scenarios.

scenario 1: existing client website
the site designed, not optimal web. full of nested tables, little css attached. additional browser detection and/or css code need apply site, strips down optimal?

scenario 2: new site / subdomain
not sure if of overlaps scenario one, browser detection, instead of having re-design site entirely in css (if had to), perhaps having detection of mobile web device relay http://mobile.yourdomain.com ?

general question: if , when need graphics, what's safest pixel height , pixel width?

rules of thumb building mobile web sites "less more" , "one
size doesn't fit all."
knowing mobile devices target better serve
mobile audience. example iphone uses real browser whereas nokia,
motorola , others use special mobile browser.. re-building
your current site css handhelds work on not
all devices. read can understanding of
similarities , differences between handheld devices. use images sparingly
and sized fit device in hand.
