Does a Customize-able Led Visual Music Display Exist?

basically want effect, grid:
i've seen few sound projects before, , know of them involve having audio file set-up before hand. i'm wanting though, take signal directly blue tooth receiver , convert pattern it's playing through speakers. cool if had have set-up files, speaker going on go , needless then.
this going part of larger project, , 4 leds in each blue square can connected 1 output pin. again, since have no experience on topic, wanted plan worst. have no idea how many pins programming need meet these needs. sacrificing 18 pins hard (one each 2x2), if possible less i'll take opportunity. also, @ moment grid bulky 2x2 set of leds being each level indicator shrink if can well.
what had in mind program had been created adjustable fit other sized grids one. if kind of program doesn't exist, going bit more difficult.
