Is the FTP thing really a good idea? - Joomla! Forum - community, help and support

i have been running joomla long time. since before became joomla even. have uploaded beta 1.5. looks incredibly cool seems have things find questionable.
one of main stickers ftp update idea. i'll admit had few interesting moments trying install work. solutions simple... download , use svn. ftp thing not work. following when try tell site save global configuration changes:
* jftp::connect: not connect host:localhost on port:21.
* jftp::connect: not connect host:localhost on port:21.
* jftp::_putcmd: not connected control port
* jftp::login: bad username.
* jftp::_putcmd: not connected control port
* jftp::_mode: bad response.
* jftp::_passive: not connected control port
* jftp::write: unable use passive mode
message
* error has occurred! unable open config file write!
so ftp account setup joomla had problem. went server , checked out configuration ftp account. couldn't find wrong there tried connecting ftp client , went right in site root directory. if running these troubles sure others experiencing issues ftp idea well. isn't there better method? or can point me in right direction sort out?

you don't need use ftp layer. people having serious problems permissions.
