SD Library Inconsistency between Arduinos [SOLVED]

i'm working on project custom-fab pcb sd socket wired hardware spi pins on avr (an atmega328p).  i've been doing of development work on software on sparkfun pro micro, based on m32u4.  i got project work.

i use sd library in usual manner:
code: [select]
sd.begin(ss)

on pro micro, works great, can read/write sd no problem.

i swap out pro micro bare 328p pdip28.  i using internal 8mhz rc osc on pro micro, , set 328p same.  i changed target 328p in arduino, , compile , deploy code.  and sd card doesn't work.

at point, got out handy saleae logic.  here looks pro micro in place:

great, mosi/miso alive, pro micro sends request go spi command mode, , card replies.  ~20ms later, 32u4 puts sd high-speed 2mhz mode.  awesome.

here's same code running on 328p same hardware setup:

same signal avr card, , hear nothing.

everything seems alright on 328p's end, isn't, doesn't work.

any ideas be?

quote
...and hear nothing.

"hear nothing"?  expecting processor holler?
