ms word can improve grammar , writing style significantly, , give readability score work. here's how switch on analysis tools. (from i've seen, it's better indicator fog index). following comes technical writing course).
in ms word, select menu > tools > options > spelling , grammar tab.
i recommend following settings (from office 2003, similar if have different version of word).
spelling: put tick next following:
check spelling type.
always suggest corrections.
ignore internet , file addresses.
then in grammar section:
check grammar type.
check grammar spelling.
show readability statistics.
writing style: click on drop-down , select grammar , style.
click on settings button , find defaults ok, clear ticks not happy about. (for example, don't mind sentences beginning and, but, etc. plain english doctrine says it's ok use these impact or emphasis.)
click ok , ok again finish.
word keep check on grammar , writing style, spelling. remember, provides indicators of thinks might problem area; can click "ignore once"; it's accurate , helpful.
next, make sure (a) default language settings correct, , (b) language set whole document same, or won't work properly.
then, when finish doc, final spell-check [f7] , deal suggested corrections. display readability analysis of document.
for style, aim average words per sentence around 15-20. passive sentences, keep low: maximum 20%, aim 10% or less.
flesch reading ease aim 60-70 readers; lower more difficult.
flesch kincaid grade level aim 7 8; higher more difficult.
if have overseas readers first language not english, remember choose suitable vocabulary, , use no idiomatic expressions – don’t translate!
(look in word "kincaid" if want details.)
gradually develop writing style if don't quite have already. (this reply scores passive sentences 0, flesch reading ease 66.1: right on target.)
