arduino to max , send serial/data not from pin monitoring?

hello got max , looking through arduino max communication methods on arduino playground couldn'tsee text method allow me send numbers on command.  mean system whereby have if statement , actuation number sent max ?. can't work out descriptions if of methods listed in arduino play  ground allow because allot seem talking reading pin states?

am being dense
i suppose tell arduino write pin state , number max way ?
