Thread: Easy backup solution?

hi!

had 2 hard-drives go bad on me recently, got "infected" "click of death".

since reviews of hard-drives i've read looking new ones tells me today's hard-drives, while growing tremendously in size, worse quality used be, feel need easy powerful backup solution before next hard-drive dies on me, missus can restore individual files.

media (videos, music) except photos have sitting on raid5 set-up (that getting full, time upgrade).

personal documents, photos etc. have in /home in separate partition on main drive.

have been looking around looking incremental backup tool not fill backup-drive fast, , read point towards using rsync or rsnapshot. these not easy use people not used terminal.

wife able use doing recovery of files etc. , not know how use terminal. have therefore looked @ different powerful(?) gui-front-ends rsync

2 (3?) promising solutions graphical front-end have found flyback (http://code.google.com/p/flyback/) , timevault (http://www.techthrob.com/2009/03/02/...-depth-review/), grsync contender (http://www.opbyte.it/grsync/).

timevault disqualifies due naming convention used, forces use snapshot browser. able use file-manager restore files, if necessary after total breakdown of hard-drive.

leaves me flyback, has not been updated in while, or?

have missed gui-app doing easy incremental backup , restore?

views on these apps?

i have icon on desktop run rsync backup commands (rsync -avh --delete source destination), one-click duplication of system on external hard disk, copies changes since last backup. backup @ least weekly, , after doing valuable work.

once in while (before going away on holiday, usually) make dated copy of backup. have series of these complete backups going years, manually delete media (video, photos, pictures etc) oldest backups save duplicated space.

can find files on system can find lost files on backup, , if system disk failed rsync destination source restore it.
