brands :

mileage out of ibm thinkpad r51, built last. (in australia, 'built brick outhouse, mate!')

ibm's laptop divison owned lenovo, , still make laptops worthy of thinkpad name. if don't thinkpads, dell make reasonably durable laptops (try vostro line, intended business users.)

have found both ibm laptops , dell laptops have excellent hardware compatibility linux.

don't buy toshiba, compaq or hp. in job (it support officer) i've seen these laptops die on people alarmingly often, , hardware support shocking. (i *never* found working drivers toshiba owned.)

processor (intel/ibm)
imo, should intel processor. here reasoning :

1) battery life
current intel notebook processors deliver better performance per watt, means cpu runs cooler , battery lasts longer
battery life important criteria laptop. cares if notebook if powerful enough play cod4 if can 30 minutes before shutting down?

2) your concern cost :
going spend @ least $1000* on laptop going last 3 or 4 years, @ minimum, if treat right. why trying shave pennies off cost? better machine, won't need new 1 in 2 year's time.

compatibility :
intel make motherboards , chipsets. have never had compatibility issue intel hardware (if anything, intel hardware standard , compatible gets.)

reliability :
have found intel hardware rock-solid (again, built brick outhouse.) of intel desktop motherboards have seen have lasted @ least 5 years; have specimens 12 years old (in server) , still work. indicator of build quality.

*$1000 australian dollars gets entry-level laptop.

off bed me!
