What Stepper and Encoder System to use

hello,

i have spent lot of time trying find out appropriate application, many people seem dismiss idea of using encoder stepper.

i building cnc wire cutter/stripper, using linkage mechanism in conjuction sparkfun stepper motor generate linear motion drives stripper blades. have encoder know if step missed. microstepping stepper @ 1/16, .11 degrees resolution. easy attach motor. sparkfun had encoders told me werent designed used stepper motors.

what recommended stepper encoder combination? budget $50, reliable stepper motor isnt low quality, torque isnt of problem.

also, homing sensor the  linear travel, needs can instantly return position isnt off more .0005".
