Image gallery w/ thumbnails w/o frames?

hello all,

i need create portfolio of illustrations. want have thumbail images on side main area right. when roll on thumbnail changes color, when click thumbnail corresponding larger image appears in main area.

the question: can without frames? hate frames. can build basic web page using old-school tables, , i've used frames in past, can't total design current project work right (in ie) , right it's frames killing me.

is there css solution? other fonts i'm css newbie. need site , willing have temporary solution starters , learn whatever have to update in coming months.
