Using arduino to control opening and closing of valve input from optical sensor

hello, doing final year engineering project in control exhaust valve in 2 stroke engine  (i designing valve) controlled arduino borad receives input optical crankshaft sensor.
i'm thinking of using arduino uno r3 suitable type of project or should go someother boards?
your sugestions welcome other ideas.
ps:
i in starting stage of project , havent done indepth study of sensors , valve.
if possible link of sensors can use.

yes, uno r3 suitable.  or "pro mini" usb ttl adapter programming, can disconnected in actual use when not needed programming & monitoring.

i have laptop dead motherboard . can remove components laptop , in anyway possible connect raspberry pi inbuilt display , keyboard on laptop ? (and touchpad if possible).
