Nightwing (DC Comics) Sticks for my son (parts and coding advice)

hello,

my son dying pair of these "eskrima" sticks, light , make sounds, can see selling $1100, think may tad pricey 11 year old's toy.

having dabbled arduino in past, leds , ambient light sensor make r2d2 night light, thought make project together.

i thinking of using accelerometer gauge when stick stopped suddenly, or swung , having leds light in sequence , "electric shock" sound play result.

here tentative parts list put @ least prototype (sparkfun wish list):
   arduino pro micro - 5v/16mhz
   triple axis accelerometer breakout
audio-sound breakout  (for playing sound effect files)
surface transducer - small (smallest speaker-type thing find, thinking put 1 in each end of each stick)
   mono audio amp breakout

does seem reasonable set @ least started?  thinking these parts fit in 1-1.5" diameter pvc or other plastic pipe, can figure out if can working.

finally - comfortable in c#, ruby, , javascript , less in c.  have seen demos prototyping run ruby or javascript on computer , interact arduino read sensors , control it.  seems quick way prototyping, knowing i'd have translate c final version embedded on arduino.  think approach, or should bite bullet , work in c directly on board?

i'm looking tips on reducing initial cost , time investment proof of concept working, , i'll start spending/working on final build once have code , electronics functional.

thanks!
